McKinley County is a unique place in terms of land availability.  McKinley County’s land distribution and status is most easily referred to as “checkerboard”, meaning that it is like a mosaic of land types.  Over 80% of land in the County is controlled or held in trust by the Federal government.  There is about 1,089 square miles of private land in McKinley County.  The County has a good working relationship and has facilitated deals with several of the larger landholding entities and families.  These partnerships are a crucial factor in economic development in McKinley County.

Also, the Navajo Nation manages several industrial parks and sites in the County, which can offer unique advantages and business partnership opportunities.
